What Month is Best to Plant Flowers?

Posted on May 9, 2021

Planting flowers in the right month can mean the difference between a beautiful, healthy flower garden and a dead one. It doesn’t matter if you are new to flower gardening or have been doing it for a long time. No matter where your experience with growing flowers is, there are some basics that will help you decide which month to plant your favorite flowers. These basics can be used regardless of whether you are planting annuals, perennials, or bulbs.

First of all, consider the location of your flower garden. The spot you choose will influence the type of flowers you will grow. Is the area near a tree or building? Will it receive a lot of sun or shade? What season of the year is the flower in question going to be in bloom? The answers you get to these questions will help you decide what month is best to plant your flowers.

For example, in determining what month to plant a flower such as daffodils, the answer you get will depend on many factors. First, will you be able to get the flowers off easily in the fall? Some flowers, such as tulips, are best planted right after they bloom in the spring. Others, such as daisies and lilies, can be planted a little later, into the summer months. If you are not able to get the flowers out of the ground during the summer months, don’t worry; by the end of September you can usually place them in the ground and get them out.

As you consider the location of your flowering beds, consider the amount of sun and shade your flower garden will receive during different seasons of the year. Annuals and perennials can handle sunny areas better than other kinds of flowers, such as tulips. Some flowers, such as daisies and lilies, need more sun than others, so it’s important to keep that in mind when planning where to place your flowering plants. If you live in an area where there are seasons of sunny weather throughout the year, planting your flowering flowers in the fall is a great choice.

Annuals, which include many vegetables, are best planted in the spring or fall. These plants grow slowly and are susceptible to the cold. Although annuals do well in colder climates, it’s still a good idea to plant them early so they can have time to acclimate to their new location. Planting your flowers in the fall also ensures that the flowers will have plenty of time to develop their colors before the new year arrives. If you’re concerned about the cold weather, it’s a good idea to dig the flower seed packages out of the ground before the first snow falls.

Some perennial flowers, such as crocuses and violets, love full, hot sunlight. So if you’re growing flowers that need lots of sunlight, it’s a good idea to plant them in a location that gets an abundance of natural sunlight throughout the growing season. Sunflowers, for example, can be planted in the shade during the summer months so they can enjoy the shade as well. Other plants, such as marigolds, need a bit of full sun, so they should be planted on a south or west facing part of your home during the hottest part of the day.

Some perennials, such as azaleas and zinnias, prefer a more frosty environment. Frost-resistant flowers and plants, such as hydrangeas, are perfect candidates for the winter. While the flowers may not bloom, at least they will be dormant until the spring. Perennial flowers that need a bit of sun may be best planted from the fall on. This will ensure their plant growth and color will be ready for the new year when the flowers come back into bloom.

Knowing the answer to “what month is best to plant flowers” will help you decide which flower types and colors to plant for maximum beauty. Each flower starts out with a small flower bud. This flower is perfect for beginning gardeners and experienced gardeners alike because it is easy to care for, grows very fast, has a long lifespan, and is very forgiving when it comes to pests and disease. This makes it one of the best flowers to start planting when you’re planning your garden!
