The first thing that needs to be done before you start to construct an apartment garden is to consider the location. The place where you are going to build your balcony garden must be suitable for the needs of your balcony.

For example, if you have a balcony in the middle of the apartment, the standard building codes usually state that you cannot build a balcony that is more than 8 feet wide. On the other hand, if you plan to put a patio or an outdoor kitchen on your balcony, then you need to make sure that your balcony can accommodate this.

Now, how much space is needed for a balcony gardens? By figuring out the specific size of the space that you have available, you can easily decide on the design and the location of your balcony garden.

Also, to avoid problems later on, do not make the mistake of building the garden in the middle of the apartment, especially if you are going to have a bigger apartment. The reason is that balconies are frequently used by kids in the afternoon and it is better to place it in a part of the apartment that is not easily accessible.

Also, keep in mind that the area should be usable at least during the morning and evening of the week. This is because the conditions can be quite variable, especially during the cold season.
