There are privacy plants for this purpose that can be placed in the shade. Some plants can become overgrown and they are not good to have in the shade anyway. You may have to trim them back or keep them trimmed so that they do not take over. Plant them in a container garden, and they will bloom.

Hedges are another option for container gardening plants for privacy. Horseshoe hedges look great planted in a pot on the deck. The best way to plant them is to plant them in a potting mix that contains gypsum. Other important ingredients to consider include coconut husk and potting soil. For a shady hedge, Chinese elm and creeping Rosemary make a nice addition to any landscaping plan.
