Cilantro Indoors: How to Grow and Harvest Herbs Indoors

Posted on September 22, 2021

Planting cilantro is not difficult, but there are a few things you need to know before you begin. If you are planting your first crop, you should wait until the soil is warm before planting. This allows the cilantro to become established and it will be easier to harvest.

What You Will Need Before you begin growing cilantro indoors, you will need some pots, a few pots full of soil, a handful of sharp cilantro stems, some wire mesh or newspaper, and three to four feet of good, dry mulch. In addition, you will need some water. You can get by with just a couple of inches of water in the mix because the soil can become compacted easily. What you will need to have is a tray to place the pots on top of. You can use a square tray or a round one, as long as there is at least three feet between the pots.

Planting Herbs is Easier When You Know How To Do It Cilantro is an attractive plant to grow and there are dozens of different varieties available. However, most people don’t know how to grow cilantro plants properly so they end up with a bunch of flat-leaved herbs that are hard to control. A little care is all that it takes, especially when you are growing cilantro indoors. Your first step in growing herbs is learning how to plant them correctly. You can purchase books or go online for tips.

When planting your herbs, start with six to eight inches of soil in a shallow pot. If you want to grow cilantro in the yard, go ahead, but for indoors go with about six to ten inches. Make sure that the soil is full sun or partial shade. Full sun means that it gets direct sunlight all day long, while partial shade means that it gets indirect sunlight that’s less than full.

For the initial season, you should water your cilantro plants only once a week because as they grow, they tend to wilt. It’s better to water in the morning then wait until afternoon to give your herbs water. In addition, if you’re growing indoors go with a low light. It would be great if you have a bright sunny window. However, if you can’t get the sun, just give them the same amount of sunlight that they would have if you were growing outdoors.

The Growing Propagation System – For the best results when planting cilantro, you should start out in the spring, about two to three weeks before you expect to harvest. Start preparing your soil by removing all of the grass and sod from your garden bed and putting the soil in a large Tupperware container. Using a watering can, pour your potting soil into the container so that it will be well-dirtied and ready for seed.

Plant the seeds at the bottom of the Tupperware container. Make sure that it’s well-drained so that the water does not dry out. When the young plants start to grow, they will look tiny, almost like miniature roses. Do not remove the young leaves from the plant. These are called “spiders” and can harm your plants.

After the young plants begin to grow, you will need to start preparing your herb for harvesting. Place the small pot on a large piece of newspaper to allow air circulation and moisture. You should begin harvesting by taking the small ones out of the soil and putting them into your harvesting basket. This is also where you’ll store your herbs until you are ready to use them. Once you are finished harvesting, fertilize your plants. Fertilizer should be applied every three to four weeks during the growing season.
