Can I Plant Herbs in a Small Space?

Posted on June 29, 2020

Herb gardening is one of the newest trends in landscaping, and there are many reasons to consider it. A large garden, for example, may be lacking some of the hardiness that a larger location would offer, but in a smaller area, herbs can still thrive with the right amount of light, soil and watering. In addition, the decor of an herb garden makes it seem like a more welcoming atmosphere for guests of friends.

In an attempt to answer the question, “Can I Plant Herbs in a Small Space?” I have compiled a list of things that may help. Many of these suggestions are self-explanatory, but I’ll include a few guidelines as well. Just keep in mind that in most cases, herbs have no legible height, so simply decorating a smaller area with taller herbs may make for a more pleasing experience.

The simplest answer to the question, “Can I Plant Herbs in a Small Space?” is yes. A tiny plot of land could easily be filled with herbs, and this gives you the freedom to experiment and grow your own collection of favorite herbs. Keep in mind that some herbs are not adapted to growing in pots, and as such you should be careful to avoid them if you plan on doing this. To that end, you’ll want to buy containers that are firm but not too large to allow for air circulation.

Also, the answer to the question, “Can I Plant Herbs in a Small Space?” lies in the type of soil you choose. For example, a flat sandy soil is ideal for small plants, but if you plant herbs in a mixture of soil and gravel, then you are better off using soil that is slightly compacted.

When it comes to “Can I Plant Herbsin a Small Space?” there are a few items that will increase the usable area of your herb garden, without increasing the size of the pot or container:

  • Water- Rich soils have a natural tendency to drain quickly, and they are also generally darker colors. By planting in such soil, your herbs will be able to get enough water to thrive. Of course, this does not mean that you can’t plant herbs in a pot, as that is an option as well.
  • Be sure the soil you use is in good shape before you plant your herbs. Even if you have recently been through the plowing process, it’s still a good idea to check the soil. Large weeds will need to be cut away before your herbs can thrive. Even if you live in a very sunny region, you should check the soil each year before planting to ensure that it is always moist enough to plant herbs in.
  • Plenty of space. A smaller pot will mean that your herbs can grow even if you have a tight budget. Make sure that the area you are placing the herbs in is large enough to allow for root growth, which is vital to your herb gardening success.
  • Be sure that the area you choose is a shade-bearing one. This means that a window that faces south will be best. You will also need plenty of wind and sunlight during the day, as such conditions are necessary for healthy root growth.
  • Be aware of your herbs’ needs. Some herbs require less water than others, and you need to learn this before you begin. Herbs such as thyme, parsley and Rosemary all need lots of sun, so consider where you will be planting the plants to determine the amount of sun they need.

Another excellent source of information on growing herbs is the internet. There are many websites available to give you tips and advice on herb gardening. You will also find a wealth of information on how to care for your new plants and how to do it without causing harm to your plants.

When asked, “Can I Plant Herbs in a Small Space?” it’s important to be able to answer with a “Yes!”
